Introduction

Advertising is all around us and is integral to evryday life.it is one of the largest sectors of the media industry, adverts being presented in a wide range of media such as television, film, radio, magazines, posters, billboards, the press, and the internet.Of all of these, television advertising probably has the highest profile, some television advertisments being so effective and memorable that they become classics and part of the cultural background for a whole generation of viewers.Television is used to market almost evry product one can imagine from evry day consumables, like washing powder, to extravagent sports cars, whilst some advertisments promote a service such as insurance, banking or vehicle breakdown cover.

Television advertising has become more and more sophisticated, utilising the very latest digital production techniques.Content and style can be simple or complex, using traditional narrative  structures or less obvious surrealist imagery, and messages can be overt or understated.

I have created this blog to show my understanding of the structures and techniques used in television advertisements.

I have covered structures relating to form, style and the codes and conventions used in adverts.

I have also discussed with examples the diffrent techniques that advertisers use to promotote a product.

Structures of Advertisements

The structures of television advertisements relate to its form, style and the codes and conventions used by media producers.Over the next series of blog posts i will discuss each of these in detail with examples.

Form-Animation

Animation is the quick display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions to create an illusion of movement. The effect is an optical illusion of motion due to the   persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in several ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although there are other methods. They use it persuasivly on childrens adverts, for example the coco pops advert appeals to children/kids because they can relate to cartoons more because thats what they watch.

Animation obviously appeals to the more child audiance because thats what you watch when your a kid so if your selling an item for a target audiance of 3-10 yeatr olds and play it in animation , kids will understand it more. Also kids have an imagenary mind so exaggeration and animation would be a persuasive technique.

Form-Documentary

A documentary is a set video created in the terms of non-fiction, people use documentary styles to there adverts because its believable because theres either a proffesional opinion or facts , for example the colgate advert uses this technique by having a proffesional dentist say "I approve of this toothpaste because......"it makes it sound more realistic and attracts more users.

Form-Narrative structures

A narrative structure is a story's layout and how to write it.Within a story there is always what charicters ?, where is it set?, what conflicts are they? and how does it end.... these are key for a story to work. Also a non-linear narrative is one that does not proceed in a straight-line, step-by-step fashion, such as where an author creates a story's ending before the middle is finished. Linear is the opposite, when narrative runs smoothly in a straight line, when it is not broken up.

Form-Stand Alone/series

stand alone advertisement is a form of advert that is a one off, there will not be another advert by the same company that is related in terms of the story. A stand alone advertisement as a beginning and an end, no other advertisement from the same company will start the ad where the last one finished. Yell produced many stand alone advertisements in a three month campaign of adverts to tell their consumers their new phone number.

An advert that is part of a series has a constantly developing story. The series usually has a main character and additional characters. BT uses a series of adverts. In each of their adverts we see a family consisting of a mother, her son, her daughter and her new husband. This family goes through some problems that audience members will be able to relate to and in the series, BT broadband helps the family to cope with trouble they face.
